Fridays Back Blog...

music: Crackle of Fire, patter of rain
mood: FUll of it.

Due to web issues, here's the post from Friday...

Well, it’s 3 days into Thanksgiving weekend and I’ve got two more to go. I’m hauled up in Santa Clara for the Holiday, house sitting and dog sitting. My canine companion for the next few days is a HUGE 100+ pound 1 year old Mastiff named Jess. She’s adorable. Beautiful. And very, very, slobbery. I’ve been slimed much. Not the kind of kisses you really want to be woken up by, but certainly amusing. She’s very well behaved (except when you leave he for a few hours and come back and she tries to jump on you and nearly knocks you over), and though the wrinkles of her snout make her look continually sad, she’s a tail wagging beast, and very therapeutic. I can’t believe I get paid for this. The start to a great mini vacay.

Wednesday saw me head to the Tech Museum with Justin, resident geek of the Highland Palace. As we looked at our IMAX options (sadly Mystery of the Nile, and Coral Reef were NOT playing) a gnome of a man crept up to me and asked if we were going to the movies. As he was looking right at me, I mentioned we would go to the museum and the IMAX both. He handed me a 2 for 1 coupon on the already reduced holiday pricing. Right on. $4 for our Mystic India IMAX experience (decent, interesting, must go to India, would have like to see fishes or Egypt more, but hey no biggie) and 3 hours of Geek heaven. Among my favorite exhibits were, 1) internet arm wrestling, where you could arm wrestle another person at another museum with a “arm” contraption and a web cam (or the person next to you at the other station), 2) the build your own rollercoaster and then watch the simulation 3) the 3 dimensional graphic representation of your head 4) jet powered chair demo 5) the entire alternative power exhibit (solar, wind, electric cars etc) and 6) the “The Way Things Go” video which was a mesmerizing seemingly endless Rube Goldberg installation described as “100 feet of physical interactions, chemical reactions, and precisely crafted chaos” and they have it on Netflix. Oh yeah. It wasn’t too crowded and the kids in the place were so tech savvy it was awesome. They were having a blast and it was particularly refreshing to see little girls running around being nerds.

This coming right after hearing Steve Wozniack speak was a perfect example of why I love the Silicon Valley so much. So innovative and people get so excited over Science. Steve’s interview which I had a free front seat to was so inspiring and enjoyable. Guy Kawasaki was a fantastic interviewer and the two just told of pranks, and how they helped create the Silicon Valley by just being big geeks. It was classic. Steve’s stories of pranks and high tech high jinx were an awesome insight into how genius, coupled with integrity, passion and a sense of humor, can really make a significant contribution to humanity. Steve certainly lives in his own head (and world) but is very aware of the good that people must do to progress the world. With all his absolute LOVE for technology, he plainly and without hesitation related that humans are what will create world peace, no bit of technology will be the answer.

One might think the Ballet is about the farthest thing from the Tech Museum you can get, but I find that when I get a bit overwhelmed with all the dancing, I turn my gaze upwards and check out the lighting. One of my favorite classes at college was lighting design, and the board they had at Kenyon with which we got to light the dance concerts was AWESOME. SO FUN to play with, and in music and movement at the visual collage was every bit as satisfying for me as ACTUAL collage and we know how much I enjoy that. This past week I saw a gorgeous ballet called Giselle. It was a surprise pleasure to watch. I never know what I’m going to like, but this was classic and romantic, and just beautiful. The main ballerina was of course a talented dancer ( made it look so easy) but also had phenomenal chemistry with the lead male and her “mad” scene was better than I have seen any actress play Ophelia. Seriously wonderful. The second act scenery and lighting nearly took my breath away, just stunning. A forest haunted with spirits and magic washed the stage in gnarled trees, graves, moonlight and fog. I didn’t even wait for the curtain to rise completely before applauding the set and lights. Gauche I know, but I’ve always been one to give credit where credit is due.

On the Theatre scene, and I’ve seen lot in the last two weeks, my favorites were Greater Tuna at San Jose Stage and Brilliant Traces at Dragon Productions. Both were short 2 person shows in intimate stages. Both had excellent scripts, appropriate staging and scenery, and both had moments of humor and drama. Next week I am VERY excited to see the modern adaptation of Learned Ladies by Moliere at Theatreworks. The Learned Ladies of Park Avenue looks fantastic and being that Moliere is my favorite playwright of all time, and I was IN Learned Ladies at college, I am uber excited at a chance to see this.

Thanksgiving itself was lovely. I won scrabble (always a joy =]) had plenty of wine and champange, and more food than I can remember eating in years. Somewhere between Dutch Apple Pancakes, Baked Brie, and our Acutall Thanksgiving Meal there was room for YUMMY corn Soup…a new addition to the day’s traditional menu, and appreciated so much that I couldn’t even eat dessert or have my port I was so looking forward to. Oh well. Mom did a great job, and I had fun as always playing Sous (or SUS as we refer to it) chef. Even Wolfie hung around and seemed more excited than normal when I cut up the giblets for him and fed him. He came back for seconds and thirds even. It was a good day of general hedonism and gluttony by the fire. Conversation included the mental impact homelessness has on individuals and how to educate the recently turned homeless in a beneficial way, the Lodi Cancer foundation, Sandy’s uncanny ability to name all the Sean Connery Bond films in Chronological order on the fly, Drag queens and their right to buy lingerie at department store, the difference between homosexuals, transvestites, transgender persons, and cross dressers, and of course jobs and how those are going in respect to a plethora of bosses that are personality challenged ( not mine of course). A phone call from London and from Portland/Vancouver rounded out the day pleasantly.

I’ve seen a few movies as well this weekend, and as I imagine I will dedicate an entire blog to Mr. Bond when I see Casino Royale with the family tomorrow, here’s the down low on the recent flicks.

Stranger than Fiction: A little bit I Heart Huckabees, A bit Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, with the always compelling Maggie Gyllenhaal and very funny Will Farrell and the very well cast Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffmann and you have a great movie. I enjoyed it. It will hold a soft spot for any writer/English major and for the hopeless romantic as well. Different than what I expected but really a well done film. Lots of subtleties worth a second look on DVD later on. 4 RRD’s

Thank you for Smoking: Certainly and interesting look on spin, nothing special or unpredictable, and though unique and decently acted, I’m not thrilled to be honest. An unenthusiastic 3RRD’s

Proof: Wow. Very good I thought, great acting, well written, hard topics. Winner for the most abrupt ending though. I was not prepared for it to be over at all. Solid work all around. 4 RRD’s

And some other things weighing on my mind….

Leonardo: Okay, why, WHY do directors INSIST on casting Leonardo Di Caprio in movies where he has to have an accent. It was pathetic in Gangs of New York, it was upsetting in The Aviator, I can’t even watch the trailer for The Departed, The Man in the Iron Mask, I don’t think so and now he’s going to pull off a South African Accent. Please. Someone explain to him to go back to his roots here. His best films, where he talked with a good old Californian accent. Marvin’s Room, A Boy’s Life, even What’s eating Gilbert Grape and Catch Me if You Can. Or Better yet, don’t open your mouth. Just sit there and look pretty okay?

Jeep: Why do you need a 4 door Jeep? Isn’t part of the fun hopping in the sides a la the dukes of Hazzard? It’s silly. It’s Pointless. Stop the madness.

My Scarf: In preparation for my winter U.K. Trip, I found myself looking for a nice warm scarf in Target. Sure enough I found a lovely fuzzy black one for $9.99. The price was right and it was oh so soft and very me. Functional, classy, unique, tactile, cheap….me. I’ve given it a test run and it’s lovely, it’s very cozy. To my absolute horror though as I was cutting the cleaning instruction tag of I discovered it is in fact….10% rabbit fur. And I’m horrified, seriously. I don’t know what to do. I can’t return it. It’s too late. And I think well I eat meat and I wear leather and all that…but…but…but...a little bunny. And how can Mopsy, Flopsy and Cottontail be so CHEAP!? And I try to justify it, I try and think it’s so I won’t freeze to death, that‘s why I am on the top of the food chain here, or maybe, just MAYBE, these are from the over population of rabbits in Australia that are causing destruction. And then I think I might vomit if I wear it, and then I think I have it, and if I don’t then bunnies died in vain. And so it’s quite a pesky conundrum I find myself facing. Maybe Wallace and Grommit can help me out here. Sigh. WWEFD…what would Elmer Fudd Do? So I name my scarf George and I love it, and pet it, and I make the best of a bad situation. I pretend it was a gift, and I would be rude not to wear it and I hope no one throws red paint on me.

And so I leave the rest of my thoughts for tomorrow’s blog. 33 Days and counting. Hope everyone’s Holiday was great!

Wonders, Winners and Weiners

music: Howie Day, Damien Rice, Josh Kelley...
mood: Happy Donut

CONCIDENCE: I went to Cost Plus World Markets, the place I imagine I would chose if I had to be stuck in a store and live forever (boy wouldn’t that be weird if that ACTUALLY happened) to buy ginger beer. This is all I bought. What are the chances that the man in front of me also was JUST buying ginger beer. Very odd. Maybe we know something no one else does, or we don’t even know.

PASS THIS: Went to finally update my passport photo and get that expedited. I smiled as you do when a camera is pointed at you, resisting the urge to stick out my tongue. And the guy at the Fedex/Kinko’s explained you can’t smile. I was offended. This is not a mug shot, I’m happen when I travel, I look like crap perhaps when I get off the plane to anywhere requiring a passport, but let’s be serious, I’m OFF the plane, I’m smiling. THIS is what I look like, a happy wreck, take the damn picture. Well being a happy person it took 4 attempts to get me looking sufficiently pissed so the image could be immortalized for 10 years.Whatever.

NUTS AND SQUASH: My new favorite treat, 3 minute microwave zucchini. I’ve always loved the word but never really liked it. At least I don’t like it uncooked in stuff. But MAN, do I love the stuff just warm and sweet with a tad of butter. And corn nuts. Hadn’t had corn nuts in forever, boy do I love those. They had them at the concession stand of Forever Plaid last week and I was totally enamored again. Mmmm corn.

FLASHBACK: Went to a gas station, a BEACON station over the weekend and was totally confused when I got our and was about to start pumping gas and couldn’t find the auto pay slot. Uh,….how do I pay? Oh, I have to go in and pay FIRST? Which, besides being way, way, way out dated and oh such a pain to actually have to TALK to people, is lame because you can’t ever fill up all the way without a hassle. $30 too little, $45 too much, then I have to go back and get a refund, and the man didn’t speak English and I forgot all my Vietnamese…anyway, very bizarre how accustomed I have become to the quick fill.

WEB COOLNESS: Already of course love Wikipedia, but have you seen Wikitavel. Oh. My. God. So cool. Way wiki. Did I mention how dangerous it was I nearly have a current passport again. sigh. And you will be fascinated I’m sure at Pandora.com. An interesting Music Genome Project.

WONDERS: Did you know, there were 7 ancient wonders of the world, 7 modern wonders of the world (I’ve been to 3 of the 7), 7 natural wonders of the world and NOW there is a campaign for the NEW wonders of the world. Why? Here are my votes for Wonders of the world: Me, because let’s face it, I wonder a lot, and people certainly wonder about me, and I can be WONDERFUL. Pluto. Because we didn’t specify the boundaries of the world and I feel bad people demoted it earlier this year. The Mystery spot, cause that’s some weird stuff, Monterey Bay Aquarium, WHOLE lot of wonder going on there. And why 7, I think if we are going to be limiting and arbitrary, 4 is just fine.

NOSTALGIA: I am often amazed at my memory and how it chooses to remember certain things and forget others. Recently I had revisited the Smurfs. We taped the Smurfs on Sat mornings along with lots of other cartoons and after my swim meets I would watch them on Sundays. In looking through the episode guides I am amazed of the seasons I watched (5 out of the 9) I remember nearly ALL the episodes. I have GOT to find better use for my brain cells. Seriously.

OVER HEARD: “Large sausage…wait, what am I saying, Sausage egg sandwich for Susannah” The 4 cops at Starbucks this morning, the manger and myself thought it was funny anyway. My response “what are YOU thinking about” got a chuckle as well. Gutter, I hardly know her.

GO WEST: I had recalled hearing about Silverado the movie, ages ago from my dad. This was a movie made in 1985, a western. I recorded it on a whim, I was in a WAY western mood, hankering for saloons, horseback riding, dusters and a good gunfight and was AMAZED as the opening credit rolled. Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, Kevin Kline, Jeff Goldblum, John Cleese, Brian Dennehy, Rosanna Arquette…and the list goes on and on. With lines like “I don’t want to shoot you, and you don’t want to be Dead” you can’t go wrong. It was a GREAT story, and I was particularly impressed with a VERY young and hyper as well as funny Kevin Costner. What happened to him? He got all subdued and boring. Anyway GREAT soundtrack and just fun. 4 ½ RRDS

BONDAGE: Saw Matador with former 007, Pierce Brosnon as a really undesirable character, Think Benicio Del Toro in Loathing Las Vegas. But it was a charming movie, Greg Kinnear is really great to watch, he reminded me a bit of William H Macy in this film. Greg has a solid body of work that isn’t very versatile but really great to watch, particularly Nurse Betty and this film. 3 ½ RRD’s for this dark comedy.

STAY: A random selection starring Ewan McGregor and a great virtual unknown (at least to me) Ryan Gosling. This film is directed by Mike Forster who is German, and it TOTALLY shows in this film. He coincidentally directed Stranger than Fiction, the new Will Farrell movie that looks AWESOME that opened this past weekend. The editing in the film is ART. Reminded me of Run Lola Run crossed with Memento crossed with Donnie Darko. Fantastic, real cinema art here folks. He’s also directing the upcoming The Kite Runner, based on the book which I have but haven’t yet read. I don’t know if I understand it all to be honest, I would LOVE to watch this one with someone and get their take on it, because I can’t decide what was real and what wasn’t and it’s super cool. There’s a lot of Hamlet in this as well and references to other films which I liked. And of course a Damien Rice song at the end of the film…gotta love that…some people are just made for end credits. I have no idea why this film didn’t get more play, or any play, I never heard of it. What would I do without Netflix. 4 RRD’s.

GONE TO THE DOGS: Two dogs (big, old lovely ones) walked past the house as I was pulling out of the driveway for work this morning. Has life gotten so hectic that dogs have to take themselves for their own walks. No collars, no owner on the way, ahead or behind. The fat Border Collie eyed the jeep and I was temped to help them out (Read: dognap them to work and create chaos and trouble for all) but after a good love, they went on their way, up the hill, seemingly knowing exactly what they were doing. I swear our neighborhood. So strange. I need me some dogs. FUR!!!

LATIN STEROTYPES: There are some bad stereotypes out there, libelous and ignorant but here’s one that I have observed to be true. Latino/Hispanic men in America have NO problems complimenting a perfect stranger. Several weeks back I was sitting in a bar with my friend John. We were talking about him and his wife’s impending move to the Big Evil (Los Angeles) and a man selling flowers walks in. He of course comes up to me and I say no, only to notice that he is looking at John, no me. I look at John and say don’t. John says How much? Flower man says $10 for a dozen. I say, John, don’t. John takes out his wallet and says how about 1 rose for $1, the man is insulted and goes to try his luck at the back of the bar. We have a good laugh. 10 minutes later the man wanders to the front of the bar again, and gives me a single red rose. John gets out his wallet, the man is insulted yet again, he says in his broken English, “ No, Gift” and he wants a hug, so I thank him, laugh and give him a hug, a small price to pay for a lovely flower and lord knows I wouldn’t want to insult him myself. John continues to try to give them man $1, he gravels, following him to the door, Please take the money, the flower man gestures and nods as if to say “You gringo, have insulted this lady, and insulted ME by doing so! Your money is no good here! Shame on you! Rot you chivalrous bastard, rot in hell.” It was the source of much amusement. This past week as I walked down the street, two Hispanic men passed me and as they passed one of them just blurted out, “You look very nice, you really do.” Now, I don’t know if it’s because I smile to people on the street which they might not be used to, or if I just look happy (cause I am) but the Latin men just never hesitate to just bust out a complement. So thank you Latin male community for whatever reason, going there.

MUSIC: New Favorite song of the week...STARLIGHT by MUSE....how great are these guys?!

WINNER OF THE WEEK: Cecil Criger, a 77 year old customer I helped buy tickets on the phone. He not only has a GREAT name, which will end up in a play or something I write, but was kind enough to impart that at his age he could tell when a girl was pretty just by her voice on the phone. Funny, Criger doesn’t sound Hispanic to me?

COUNTDOWN: 41 Days.

Electric, Election and Englandic

music: None
mood: Cold and cranky

Electric: It's days when I have deadlines, and interruptions and huge amounts of work that my computer decides to malfunction. I know some people think it's god that is taking stuff out on you but I happen to think that when I am stressed I give off an electrical current a la x-men mutant. This interferes with the functionality of my computer, increases my stress, increases my electricity and magnetism and therefore creating an ugly vicious cycle of never ending technical difficulties beyond my control. I had a VERY stressful nothing going right afternoon today. Boo and hiss. It's no wonder I didn't electricute myself in the water when I was racing with the adrenaline surging. A sound theory. yes.

Wireless Rodent: My wireless logitech mxlaser mouse that was gifted to the office and no one wanted ages ago, finally was installed. Took like two seconds. I'm way pleased. Wicked Ergonomic, swoopy doopy design is comfortable and functional. YES, swoopy doopy is and Artsopolis technical term. I’m untehtered, free, and flexible, great for a gal who gestures a lot naturally and super for a small desk with two monitors.

Why oh Why is this on my ballot?: It didn't pass, (priase Allah) but it shouldn't have even been on my ballot last night. Parental permission required for a minor to have an abortion. I think not. Not until I'm allowed to decide what ADULTS get to have children. Senate and House are back with Democratic majority but we know that pretty much means the democrats will now be blamed for not making things work. If we end the war and got a decent global diplomat to run the country in 2008, maybe we can start to make small smal small strides to repair some of the damage that has been done in the past several. My overall voting experience was good but I am of course of the opinion if you have no opinion you shouldn’t be forced to make an uneducated guess. I did not vote for two things which I was undecided on. This however was not an option. It MADE Me vote before I could continue. THIS is backwards. I object. Moving on…

I'm okay, You're UK: That's right. It's official. I'll be in Plymouth for New Years. But Susannah, it's COLD in England, YOU don't vacation where it's cold or there is running water? You don't need a vaccination to go THERE? Why I hear you ask? Well you are right, but there are more important things than indoor plumbing, being able to feel my extremities, and Larium. One of these things is one's future, which as it turns out is temporarily held up in the very town my ancestors left from on the Mayflower. Remind me to tell you about the Mayflower and it’s significance sometime later. Taking matters into my own hands (sort of) I leave December 26th, Arrive London the 27th and won't take a single call or respond to an email before returning LATE on the 8th.

And the films...

V is for Vendetta: Poetry and prose were beautiful, scenic and artistic design lovely, fascinating, and educational, certainly inspired more research both on the history of the Gun Powder plot and the graphic novel the film was based on. I watched this purely conicidentally on November 1st, 4 days before Guy Fawkes day. And having seen FAWKES spelled that way, not fox, finally understood the joke of Dumbledore's phoenix being called Fawkes. Nice. 4 RRD's

Lovely and Amazing: It wasn't. AAAANNNDDDDD scene. 1 1/2 RRD's

Rumor has It: Clever concept for movie buffs, gotta love Shirely Mclaine. I want the dress (okay and the Casablanca party, a little bit) that Jennifer Aniston wears, but honestly, just a pleasant Friday night no brainer. 3 RRD's

American Dreamz: Thank you, don't call us, we'll call you. A couple of funny lines, but overall the most interesting thing about this piece was how bizarre hugh Grant looks all "buffed" out. Go back to stuttering, it's where you excelled. Gone I guess are the days of Hugh in Impromptu and Jane Austen films. 1 1/2 RRD's

Prime: Wasn't funny so much as it was just a great representation of relationships. Two best friends, the girlfriend boyfriend dynamic, Mother and Son, the girlfriends banter. VERY realistic I thought in how it approached these and so I really liked it from that standpoint. Worth a look from character development/interaction, but not the comedy so much you woud think. 3 1/2 RRD's

More soon...I can almost see my floor...YES!!! Progresss!
