09/01/2005: "Katrina and the Best Medicine"

music: Howie Day, Josh Kelly, Keane, Snow Patrol, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Alanis Morrisette, Bic Runga
mood: Toxic

Break from the chaos that is work to discuss the Chaos that is apparently the whole world. Nothing like a natural disaster to put a little selfless perspective on your life. I try to avoid the TV these days and though I read my internet news religiously, I doubt pictures really do justice to the state of things in New Orleans and surrounding areas. As a water girl and proud pisces, I have to say, I would take 7.0 earthquake every 10 years or so over a SEASON of hurricanes or Tornados every year. It just doens't make a whole lot of sense to me why people live in places where the chances of a natural disaster destroying your home or at the very least causing damage are almost certain in your life time. I'm a gambling girl and not the best at math ( though I was in fact a "super mathlete" in 8th grade and deemed gifted in math as early as 4th grade, thank you very mch) but I'm thinking the real estate must be cheap or the views spectacular for people to live in places like that.

New Orleans is a place I have often wanted to visit (my parents went ther efor their honeymoon, becuase my dad couldn't leave the country as he was in the navy and it was right arond the tim eof the Cuban Missle Crisis.) Mostly New Orleans appeals to me, cause I like vampire flicks, spanish moss, and food. This city has it all, but it also has a reputation of being dirty, corrupt and of couse haunted. Having spent 4 years in the most haunted state in the US and at a college surronded by a pentagram of 5 cemetaries, reported to have on campus one of the gates of hell I am well aquianted with the spooky side of things. I'm in touch as they say with that sort of thing and though I don't dwell, I do find that edge of moratality moebidly fascinating. So it was of course amusing to me today in the wake of all this trauma that a passing thought waded through my brain. The big tragedy for me in this whole thing, being removed somewhat from the circumstances, is the poor cemetaries. These Houses of death and cities of the dead that surround the area. Interesting amongst all DEATH TOLL and body counts that are new, what the damage to these historic places of resting will be. In a flood situation I have a really intense image of the ground being saturated and floating coffins coasting along the streets. FREAKY. Bodies newly dead and the decayed remains of ancient passed tangoing along the sludge filled mire of a ruined city. I need a private jet and a film crew pronto!

In liu of a film crew at my disposal not to mention extravagent transport, I use my free passes to the Improv tonight to see Paolo Francisco. Good hispanic comic that should lighten my mood. Row at work left me VERY demoralized on top of other retardedness I just need a pick me up, and thus, I pick myself up. Laughter IS the best medicine, and it is usually readily available. At least Marty from INXS Rockstar is still on the show, and he makes me smile, cause he's not perfect, but he puts forth such a beatiful effort and LEARNS. Smart people, humble people, passionate people. We need more of em.
