11/29/2004: "Carbs, Blobs and Ruger hauer"

music: None but the growl of a stomach
mood: cheerful under the curcumstances...

Is it Friday yet?

Just checking. Who knew doing nothing could be so exhausting and lead to such computer fussiness. My computer after it’s vacation is extremely cranky. I had my suspicions that it ate too much Turkey but whatever the cause, I have gotten very little of my stack of work done today. SO I write a LONG blog while I scan for Virus’s. Already fond 1 infected file in 133768 files so far. Ad thus the weekend recaps of laziness begins.

The Movies:

Flesh and Blood: This movie was JUST what the doctor ordered for my pristine, suburban G rated weekend. Lots of violence, plague, hot, bawdy, on occasion semi shocking, unabashed, chauvinistic sex and very little plot other than rape, loot, drink and revenge. AHHHH YEAH. All this and a hella sexy Rutger Hauer in his prime. I liked this movie so much (excellent medieval, candlelit, bathtub scene) I have created a Rutger Hauer movie rating system. I give this movie 5 out of 5 Rutger Hauers.

The Grudge. The experience was made scarier by the three small asian children that were running around the movie theatre, giggling and talking. VERY odd. I thought Chris was going to get up and scare the holy living tar out of them. SHUT UP! They got closer as the film drew to an end. This film is a renter, and a ring rip off, but glad I saw it. 1 ˝ Rutger Hauers.

Bridget Jones Diary II: It was either going to make me cry or make me laugh. It was amusing not sappy in it’s neurotic way. I was pleasantly surprised. 3 Rutgers.

Shrek II: Not impressed. Now I love Antonio Banderas. No really. I love him. But he’s an animated cat in this and though his voice is great and he has some of the funniest lines, he and Eddie Murphy were not enough to keep me interested for long. 1 Rut if that.

The Blob: the Original 1958 was interesting. Cheesy model work, poor acting by Steven McQueen, yes Steven back then, and even worse dialogue. The lines I was making up were much funnier. To me any way. Beer and Chocolate Truffles helped too. A good no brainer, excellent opening title music, but barely two Rutgers I’m afraid. The remake should be out next year.

The Chuckles: Comedy clubs are a gamble. Sometimes you win, most of the time you lose. This weekend I got very lucky. A $12 Cover charge with no cupon is a steep price for a gamble these days, but it turned out to be a very decent show. An extra surprise comic, who was easy on the eyes, free drinks courtesy of my friend Rich, who as the only male in the group I went with, somehow felt obligated to get our drinks. Fine by me. And an extra bonus of winning two free tickets to see any show at that club. So I ended up making about $12 on the deal (assuming I can get someone to pay for the drinks next time as well=)

The Grudge Match: It was a trouncing in Trivial Pursuit on Thursday. I beat my brother only to be beaten by 15 points in Scrabble on Saturday. His best word Rattan, mine Ovary, Dad and mom played on a team together, came in third with words like hint and cow. I think they went easy on us. It’s down to Monopoly over Xmas to determine the ultimate winner. I will be in training for the next month.

The Phantom Blog Reader and the Small World We Live in: Standing in downtown San Jose, waiting for the tree lighting ceremony I was approached by a phantom Blog reader. Recognized from a very brief encounter almost 3years ago and perhaps pictures. I found it interesting that of all the people in the area this phantom would not only be there, but notice me and even more comforting, approach and compliment the blog (which admittedly is like the BLOB and has a mind of it’s own). Without getting in to the long neurotic specifics of who this person is and was to a certain extent. Without discussing the complexities of why possession and the past creates intense but unfair prejudices, I found this spontaneous meeting, which could have been upsetting, to be quite the opposite. The conversation and circumstances were nurturing and the timing impeccable. I think I heard the click in my brain as a check mark ticked off a little bit of coping with life and love. I wager it was not something the Phantom consciously controlled, but it was time. A “confrontation” was needed and when “confronted” I felt a strange burden lifted. A healing. A maturity. A thankfulness. And so the winner of the Week is a time between the Phantom blog reader and time, for, as everyone has said, but no one can believe until you arrive at the RIGHT time, stepping in and clearing a little bit of the path for me. Cheers.

The Anti Atkins: I suppose if Atkins hadn’t been the diet of choice this year, and invaded all the stores with low carb I would think nothing of it but a look at the items I have eaten every Thanksgiving is pretty funny now. Candied Yams, mashed potatoes, Wild Rice, Orange Rolls, Cornbread Dressing, Turkey, Peas (which I don’t actually eat) and cranberry sauce…only a dab. Pretty amazing. I think I will start an all starch diet craze. And on that note, I am hungry, and so now off to Hobee’s to eat a “healthy dinner” with a group of crazies from the Renegade Theatre Experiment.

Live, Love, and don’t forget to write.
