Evil Rangers on Planet Earth

music: Clannad

mood: Monday. Really? I See.

Well, Happy Spring now that it has sprung and I hope everyone has been taken advantage of the weather out here at least. This weekend was a motley mix of activity and non-activity. Plans were changed, interrupted, and deterred all over the place but all was taken in stride for a girl who isn't used to change. Here are the highlights...

Everyone was kung fu fighting: Got comps to the Shoalin Monks at the Calirfornia theatre in San Jose on Friday. After an excellent PF changs dinner and a leisurely walk amongst a slew of Kansas and UCLA basket ball fans, my love and I were treated to stunning kung-fu demonstrations. It was hard not to quote Mortal Kombat during the sparring, and impossible to prevent the gasping and oohing and awing. I caught just a 20 minute demo last summer and this full on performance was absolute magic. My brother once said we can all use a little more kungfu in our lives. I have to agree. "FINISH HIM!" too awesome.

The Yin and Yang of Jack Black: Saw Pick of Destiny and as much as I wanted to enjoy this film, I really do thing you had to be on some serious drugs after the first 25 minutes to enjoy it. Just weird. I fell asleep. Mind you I had a very comfy pillow made of Hamish to fall asleep on, but really, bad movie. Can't give it more then 2 RRD's. On the other had, Jack is executive producing a show on VH1 or MTV called "Acceptable TV" 5 short pilots are shown and you vote for the 2 you like best and the winning ones get to make a new episode and have it shone. GREAT idea, short bits, clever stuff. I hope it survives.

Planet Earth: A new series on the Discovery Channel used the most advanced and unique filming photography to film the planet in action. From blue whales and sharks to moving herds of carobo, polar bears, rare russian leopards, and African animal chases that will blow you away, this show, 5 years in the making and narrated by Sigourney Weaver is AWESOME. "Where the @#*$@#$ is the camera!" is all we find ourselves saying throughout the show and then for the last 10 miuntes of each episode they SHOW you how they got the shots. Stunning. JUST stunning. It's definately aimed at conservation and showing some very rare bits of nature (some very gruesome admittedly) but if you have a chance, just check it out.

Banditas: How can you NOT rent a movie called Banditas with Selma Hayek and Penelope Cruz? I mean please. It's a moral imperative. We did. And....it was exactly what you expect. 3 1/2 RRD's for no surprises, but some fun and cheesy dialogue, some nice costuming, and great horse stunts.

Evil Rangers: I'll spare the details, but during yesterdays intended four wheeling excusion to Hollister we found ourselves lock in I kid you not, "area 5". We THOUGHT we were in the "day use area" but we were in a special area we were so not supposed to be in for some reason. We thought nothing of it when the gate was open and there were other people there. We picniced and fixed my headlights, but the realized we had been locked in by an evil ranger. During the 5-10 minutes we tried to explore a side road to see if we could get out, the others in the area somehow left, and the assumption was THEY had a key or combination. Doh! We were very stuck and none too please. Good thing we had radios, and radioed over to Justin who we had only caught a 30 second glance of an hour before. How cool is it taht becuase he works at the radio station and the radio towers use standard PG and E pad locks, that he was able to just come unlock it for us. A mile walk to the ranger station wouldn't have been the end of the world, but still, tres irriating. Justin therefore gets the hero of the week award. The Evil Ranger that locked us in however does not.

BABY!: Welcome to the world Alberto Escabedo, Espe's Brother's new son!

LAUNCH THIS!

music: Paul Simon

mood: Is it Friday yet? Oh yeah,...it is...phew.

Well its the beginning of a new era. The new ticketing system has launched at Artsopolis. And so far...it's a little too quiet. No major crisis, no failures or downs, no confusion, and tomorrow will mark the first Saturday I don't have to officially go in and report to groups. I can have an actual weekend for the first time almost in nearly 18 months. And I can have about 5 hours of time back to do other work during the week. This. Is a good thing. Very. Thought not as good as glitter. But close.

It's the big 40 for my brother and I'll be up in Pleasant Hill celebrating Saturday afternoon (instead of reporting thank you very much) enjoying the GREAT weather and a big backyard. Oh yeah...and a hot tub...mmmm...nice.

Tonight I'm off to see Blue Suede Shoes. May not be my thing at all but I've not been to an opening night at the Ballet before, and I hear this one is quiet...exciting. From a technical perspective, it's at least going to be a big deal. WE will see.

Sunday it's over to Dragon's show, Maybe Baybe It's You which has gotten rave reviews. Looking forward to seeing it for sure.

Rehearsals are going well, and still in la la land, though WAY behind in TV watching. I find TV gets less and less improtant next to smooching and good conversation. wink

Now that I have a bit more flexibility in my work schedule, lunches and after work drinks can be arranged. Carry on....

Tuesday, March 13th

I am 32 flavors and then some

music: none at the moment

mood: Poised and ready to Pounce

Greetings on the flip side of 32. I had a lovely birthday weekend. A whole 4 days. True I was hacking up lung butter for most of it, but I am in my continued state of bliss.

Friday was spent at the Lovely and Amazing Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Crowds were light, the kids running about cute, and all my fishies were happy to see me. Bat Ray petting (and BABY bat rays, SO CUTE) was of particular note as were of course lots of animals around town. Exhausted from our adventure we crashed early but the sleep was much needed.

Saturday was a nice sleep in, blowing up some shit on xbox 360, and then a drive down to Monterey again to pick up a bike for my lovely man which he spied as we left on Friday. The bike is Orange and appropriately called a Caffiene F3. It will hopefully get some play this week. We Stopped by the beach on the way where we no longer laugh at the sign indicateing "warning, waves of inconsistant size and frequency" as we were hit unexpected and made a very wet venutre back to san jose. Dinner at Bella Mia was perfect, where the home made butternut squash ravioli and Pinot Noir did not disappoint, nor did the couch curling and a surprisingly great animated feature entitled Monster House post dinner. Very silly. But just perfect.

Sunday was brunch with my parents and Sandy in Palo Alto for My Mom's birthday and then a wonderfully sunny drive up to Safari West which was HEAVEN. If you haven't been here, GO. I'll post photos and video next week if I can, but this place was fantfriggintastic. The weather could not have been better and we timed it JUST right. There were only 6 people in the entire park and on the tour the next morning. They had had 85 and 120 the two pervious days. The Food was lovely campfire fair with a SUPER mac and cheese sending us to our luxury canvas tents (complete with space heaters and electric blankets to keep us toasty). We got a special treat of a personal visit to the Giraffe Barn where we got to love the giraffes. The 3 hour tour by open jeep was AWESOME. we saw all sorts of things up close. 10 feet from a cape buffalo, within arms reach of giraffes, watusi cattle, and dozens of antelopes. Such excitement and we learned so much too. The bird Aviary was awesome and the Cheetahs were just gorgeous. I couldn't possibly explain. You would just have to go yourself.

Monday we drove the happy jeep back the long way through wine country, and ended the evening with very full guts post La Fondue and snuggled into Tuesday. I've almost shook this cold, ALMOST and it's a FULL press as we launch ticketing stuff tomorrow but life is pretty damn spiffy.

Thank you all for your well wishes, sorry I was out of range for most of the last week, but your calls, songs and emails were appreciated!

Bliss

music: MUSE

mood: Perky

Greetings faithful readers. Life proves to be pretty phenomenal as of late. My love arrived and despite the theatre and work schedule being a bear, I've had a lovely week thus far. Highlights today included a nice lunch at the brand spanking new Chili's, a mango margarita, a wonderful strol through the petsmart where kitties for adoption purred, lots of prtty fish got admired, and several fluffly puppy dogs roamed the aisles and got attacked by a certain redhead who is certainly fur deprived. The it was to wander Target and Cost Plus for Apartment bits and pieces. Back in time for me to do my reporting and for Hamish to be home to receive his couches that he bought from what I have always thought to be front for the mafia. You know the kind of store that's like a time warp and three mobsters are always hanging out smoking and look surprised if you mention you want to buy furniture. Great deal though, and soon there will be proper DVD viewing. WOOT.

Saw a cute play called HONK last night. Musical version of the ugly duckling. The kids in it were cute (some of which I had taught and gave me lovely big hugs after the show) and other than some sour orchestra note, it was a great silly no brain treat for a Friday night. Caught up briefly afterwards with a bunch of friends which is always nice. I am blessed with kind, amusing and intelligent as well as a diverse groups of friends.

Cinequet filmfestival is in full swing and Geek Towers ( Hamish's) is less than 2 blocks from the cinema showing many of the films. If we are lucky we will grab one with Co-worker Ron and his girlfriend tomorrow on urban explorers.

The weather is heavenly today, my jeep is all warm and happy as am I. The Illusionist however, over rated. Boo and Hiss. Pity.

Anyway, over and out from cloud nine and a half.

Crash and Burn

music: Hippy New Age Crap

mood: Motivated

It's been so dry for so long and then last weekend it rains buckets and I mean BUCKETS for nearly 24 hours straight and there's an inch or more of standing water on all ther roads and in some cases a lot more. This of course does not deter people from driving like reatards. In fact I think it makes them expotentially more dangerous. Driving home on the 101 from helping a friend move last Saturday it was actually kind of scary and I don't nerve easily as I survived the Alex Greenwood School of Defensive Driving, but people were just driving too fast and too close to each other. And as is usually the case, I knew before it happened it was just destined to be. A fender bender of sorts which could have been really horrendous if not for my cat like skills, the cat like skills of the cars behind me and my kick ass guardian angel. No injuries, but essentially a woman spun out in the fast lane causing a chain reaction. Hydroplaning, break lights everywhere and all sorts of stuff, and the only two cars to hit each other of course, mine and Mr Tim Phan's. The woman spun into the median but didn't hit anyone and didn't get hit amazingly as she was turned completely the wrong way. I did some "controlled" defensive driving fishtailing with no traction but even the Greenwood school of driving couldn't prevent me from ultimately, gently gliding into mr Phan who was nearly stopped in the lane to my left.

I never know when things like that happen whether they happen becuase I was THINKING less than a minute before, "what would I do if I had to stop suddenly and lost control of the car in this weather on the highway, remember to turn into the spin first" or if I thought that becuase I knew it would happen. And then sometimes you wonder what the real timelin of it all is. It's a matter of a few seconds, slowed down, but when does the though REALLY occur to you, after it's already started but befor you consiously know, or is it well before. Cause or Effect. Who knows. Anyway, as I said, no harm done, my car, fucking awesome vehicle of justice that he is, came out virtually unscathed. I just have to glue in the little orange reflecter side light thingy (technical term). Mr Phan's car had a dent which I don't know why it wasn't bigger, but both of us insured, and I have the best insurance company ever, should be no problem thought they haven't called me back yet. I got home safe after that and the rain has stopped to reveal excellent almost spring like weather this weekend. Of course I've been in the office most of it, but no matter.

On a Karmic note I do think it ammusing that I got up EARLY on SAT, bought my friend coffee, helped her move, got a call from work about something NOT my fault, rushed over to the office to fix it, did my reporting early so I could go back and help Cheryl finish moving stuff into storage, didn't eat lunch so I would be able to help, didn't even PEE after 9 in the morning, and after all these lovely wonderful helpful things, I some how still end up in a car accident. But the first accident in 5 years. The CLEAR thing though I really have to believe is that it is a bloody miracle at 60 miles an hour with such limited visibility, no one else skid into me or hit me and the damage was so minimal. So I'm glad I wasn't lazy today, I think it paid off big time. And I was very proud of myself for how calm I was. I should have been a surgeon. That and I imagine having a bright yellow car doesn't hurt.

Post "trauma" I nested a bit and watched some films....

Lucky Number Slevin: GREAT. CLEVER. A surprise at how well written and executed it is, no surprise that Ben Kingsly, Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis are the bombs. BOOM. SO fun to watch them. And Lucy Liu and Josh Harnett had great Chemistry. You will pleased to know I was mostly surprised but the end as well. Mostly. 4 1/2 RRD's

Saw II: Good stuff. Mostly Predictable but less so than the first one. Sick Sick stuff. Love it. Saw III at home.

The Dead Girl: Saw this in the theatre. A "film" not a movie. Very arty, slow moving, obscure, and the first movie in a long time where I wasn't SURE I knew some of the things that happened or didn't. A very Vague film in some places, but good. Brittany Murphy, Toni Collette, Piper Laurie, Josh Brolin, James Franco, Marcia Gay Harden and many more make this movie worth watching. Not easy to watch but worthwhile. 3 RRD's

Interspersed with movies, Saw Prelude to a Kiss at Northside which was very respectable and evoked many a laugh from me in the good way, Saw La Traviata with the Artsopolis Team which was a fun evening but mostly due to the happy hour before hand, saw the SJ Ballet Repatoire program which had two outstanding pieces and two less outstanding pieces, and this morning before coming into work to battle an ever irritating computer, I saw some great photographs at the De Saissant Museum in Santa Clara. Very Cultured. Filthy room. But Cultured.

For those of you who have been so patient, yes, next week is the date. His arrival is preceeded with lovely flowers that arrived on Friday and if the universe plays nice you won't hear from me for a few. It's been crazy as it is, and I've noticed a huge increase in nightmares that make little to know sense (people drowning, people breaking up, cats tails fallng off, odd odd stuff) except that I attribute them to all that is going on work and theatre wise. I was glad I got to go see some stuff and not have to work the events as well as visit with some friends. My apologies for not keeing in touch as much as I would like, but sometime in July I should be more apt to return calls and emails in a more timely manner.

More soon.... wink

Oscars, Winners and Losers.

music: vienna Teng and Moulin Rouge

mood: productive

One objection I think lots of people have about the Oscar nominations is that they stack the deck and so many of the movies come out in the months of January and February. I like to see movies, but at $9 + a pop, and with my theatre schedule, it really is much easier for me to watch 3 movies in a row at home, then to go see a film in the theatre. Now don’t get me wrong. I definitely go see them when I can, but I took a look at the nominees and like most years, but even worse this time around, I have seen 5 of the films nominated for ANYTHING. Cars, Little Miss Sunshine, the Devil Wears Prada, Pirates of the Caribbean, and now Pan’s Labyrinth. Babel and The Departed come out on DVD this week or next and I will hopefully see those before the 25th ceremony but it’s a bit disappointing. The films themselves look boring too. The Departed? I swear, if it weren’t for Mark Wahlberg I wouldn’t even bother. Blood Diamond? I’m sorry, didn’t I already explain not to give Leo an accent in a movie. Venus? Looks GREAT, how come I haven’t HEARD of it. Where did this film even play?

I will see these films, eventually, that’s not the point, it just that stacking them all for the short term memory voters makes the actual Oscars ceremony less and less compelling. It used to be about the films, then it became the actors and directors getting recognition they should have gotten for much better films they did before, and now it comes down to, most of the films look boring, I don’t really like the actors, I have no vested interest in the ceremony other than the fashion and I already saw the Golden Globes and the Grammy’s are this week. Still. I’ll watch. And I’ll not know if my opinions is “valid”. Wait, who am I kidding. Of COURSE it’s valid. I’m Susannah.

Here are some movies that won’t be winning any Oscars and a few that should.

Crank: Oh. My, God. If there was EVER a movie made for a Friday night. This is it. It has Sex. Violence. A good soundtrack. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it’s only an hour and a half. Loved it. Fucking rent this movie now. And turn the volume up. 5RRD’s

Ultraviolet: I actually was prepared to hate this movie lots. I didn’t. It was no award winner clearly, but it was interesting. Special effects are nothing groundbreaking but interesting. 2 ½ RRD’s

Saw: I finally saw this. Ar ar ar. It will surprise none to know that I guessed 90% the plot in about 4 minutes of the film. I only missed one crucial bit. The biggest shock was I didn’t know until the credit rolled that the main character was played by Cary Elwes. Funny too, because at one point when he is yelling (as is often the case with any accented actors) and I thought I detected a British accent. Didn’t even occur to me to see who it was though. I did enjoy the sick and twisted puzzles. I’ve been told there is more of that in Saw II, so that’s on it’s way as we speak from Netflix. 3 ½ RRD’s for trying and for Cary going undetected.

Tagedellaasdkadslak nights…more fun to try to pronounce/spell than to watch. I was in fact disappointed. Sacha Baron Cohen was amusing but annoying…par for the course. 2 RRD’s

Nanny Mcphee: I don’t know why I watched this other than I adore Colin Firth and Emma Thompson. Well executed but nothing too original. Lemony snickets meets Mary Poppins. Angela Landsbury is worth a watch. Pleasant. Kids would probably like it. 3 RRD’s

Nacho Libre: Again as with the Will Farrell movie, I love Jack Black, but I was not very entertained by this film. It wanted to be a lot funnier than it was sadly. 2 ½ RRD’s.

Pan’s Labyrinth: Wow. Dark. Beautiful. Violent. Very Spanish as my friend Kim can attest to. Best Scenic design and makeup I have seen in ages. It’s up against Dead Mans Chest for Art Direction, and it’s tough call. 4 RRD’s but this really is a violent film, there were a few parts that even phased me.

It’s been a winning couple of weeks. Along with winning sharks tickets for last Thursdays HUGE grudge match against Dallas and witnessing from row 9 a KILLER fight, I also have been given the opportunity to design sound for a staged version of Crime and Punishment at Northside. This along with finishing my children’s play by June to have it produced next April and directing and sound design for the current Pear show, makes for Susannah to have a productive next several months. This is a good thing. Bout damn time I gave myself some structure.

Losses include our beloved Sandor Salgo, a wonderful, family friend who will be missed terribly, and of course my personal tearjerker story of the year Barbaro. All that time, money, and love dumped into saving this spectacular creature and it still ended up a tragedy. Brought up lots of thoughts of Bear and how nothing could save him. No matter how much he was loved. Which sucks. Pretty much.

What DOESN’T suck though is all the great theatre I am seeing this week and next. Ballet, opera, contemporary and classics….a good smattering and a fix before my weekends are shot with rehearsals of my own.

More soon…

Monday, January 22nd

Where does the time go?

music: Steady hum of electronics and growl of my stomach

mood: maybe, what's it to you.

Time has flown and I have racognized that I am not the only one who has slacked in their blogging as of late. SO much going on, I'm not sure where to start. Quick and Painless soundbites for the faithful.

Slices:I mentioned I was cast in a show at the Pear....well...this week I've been "promoted", I wasn't expecting it, but after the director was cast in a show she couldn't turn down, I am now directing 4 of the pieces. Up for debate is still if I will be acting in one of them, which I'm banking along with the ticketing and housemanager duties, will be pushing it. So, no Acting for me this spring.

Golden Globes: Warren Beaty, don't speak. Really, just look cute, or lay off the champagne a bit. Seriously, embarrasing. Cameron Diaz, you look like a crazy lady, what happened, no really your makeup looked like it was applied by your ass. You are a beautiful girl, don't let a breakup force you out to prove anything if you are not ready. British is the New Australia. No more Nicole Kiddman, Hugh Jackmann, Russell Crowe and the likes, apparently this was the year of the Brit. Funny how life immitates art isn't it? Awards went t Emily Blunt, Helen Mirrne, Sacha Baron Cohen, hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy and to The Queen, and a variety of Britishy things. Rule number one though, do not clap for yourself people, when they announce the nominees, and the camera pans to you, don't, clap. Winners for dresses Susannah would like to wear, Drew Barrymore, J-Lo, Emily Blung and Selma Hayek. The new "cause of Hollywood" is Autism. Did you see the little blue puzzle piece lapel pins. Forget AIDS, now Autism is a fashion statement.

Movies: My GOD have I seen a lot of crap films lately.
Over the Hedge: SNORE
The WILD: So you wanted to be Madagascar did you. Too late. Bu-bye.
Mad Hot Ballroom: the WORST things about America, they MISSED the point completely, it's not all about winning, who wants to see kids cry.
Dog Park: Wow. Suck. At least there were a few cute dogs in the film.
Annapolis: Take the worst parts of Top Gun, Million Dollar Baby and GI Jane...and you have a movie better than Annapolis. Sorry James.
The New World: Q'Orianka Kilcher is lovely, and you know how I endure immense crap from Colin Farrell, but I'm sorry. What? Off the Crack Mr. Director. How about a New Screenplay? Maybe? Ya think?
Miami Vice: Except for mention of La Bodeguita Del Medio, Kieran's former place of emploment this movie was crap. Except for the font, it had nothing to do with Miami Vice. It was a movie full of "WHAT!?"

Onthe Brighter sides, films WORTH ratings:

Salems Lot. Great Steven king 2005 remake about an author in a town of vampires. Rob Lowe. Rutger Hauer as head Vampire. Good stuff. 3 1/2 RRD's

The Hole: A psychological thriller and a teen flick all in one. Slow moving and predictable but good performances. 3 RRD's

Nowhere in Africa: German film about a family that moves from Germany during WWII to Kenya and the adjustments and relationships with the people. Really very wel done. Not a very HAPPY movie, but I did enjoy the scenery and the performances. 4 RRD's

Red Eye: GREAT. Not wholly unpredicatable but excellent suspense and super performances. 4 1/2 RRD's

The Devil Wears Prada: I was unimpressed with the fashion but I thought Meryl Streep was AWESOME. I'm liking her more and more. Silly movie, but worth it to see how the subtle choices are often the strongest. 3 RRD's but a globe winning performance by Meryl.

FIRE: Saw the Fire Ballet last week in Oakland. Two things stood out in the performance of Romeo And Juliet, even more than the WAY too thin Juliet dancer. First off, there was KISSING in a dance sequence with R & J. I really loved this. I was very moved that they incorporated that in there and didn't JUST to ballet. Flaming swords and Break dancing...need I say more. Well worth the price of the tickets.

LOVE: We get closer and closer. I saw a studio downtown that was lovely and with any luck my dear will be renting it for his extended stay beginning in February sometime. Fingers, ever, crossed.

And much more soon I promise...
