 Scuppered!

†  explanatory note: this refers to the long weekend Saturday October 1st - Monday October 3rd. There were two footy grand finals and 'twas a little after Speak Like a Pirate Day.

Scuppered, Parishioners,

my Long Weekend was scuppered!

Arr, but I knew it had to happen...

ARRR! (15k image)

I have, however,

managed to do a few Good Works -

  • †  busted strings on both acoustics - one on loan from Brother B - (workan on Marty & Britney, doncha know, who woulda thunk they had so much energy?)
  • †  bought new strings & picks - one whole dollar for a tiny little pick!!!
  • †  asked Ryan, who is writing a musical, if he was gay - he said that he's not, but he does like Barbra Streisand...
  • †  declared my love of musicals & dance movies - I'm not either, and I prefer Bette Midler...

Bette Midler Sings The Peggy Lee Songbook reunites Bette with producer Barry Manilow (15k image)

  • †  re-strung my guy's guitar
  • †  watched the footy - hey! are they allowed to do that?
  • †  practised my Vietnamese
  • †  figured out how to replace the elastic in my sexy boxers

comprehensive tartan wear for men! (15k image)

  • †  talked with my long-lost auntie for about an hour!
  • †  went in to work
  • †  propagated some azaleas - two varieties, 'Tish!
  • †  watched the rugby - hey! you can't do that!(Jesu, I get fidgety without a guitar!)
  • †  did that "cross-everything-off-my-list"-type shopping - I now have kerosene pumps, bourghul & cardamom pods!
  • †  planted some seeds - mint (three varieties, 'Tish!), coriander & oregano (seeds are surprisingly expensive! - $2.55 for that? AND coriander seeds look just like the ones you buy for cooking - only 62 cents for heaps more! I wonder if they work..?)
  • †  polished & restrung both acoustics - Gibson polish, Dean Markley 11-52s - OK, Brother B? gauging of these sets was calculated not only for sound and performance but to distribute tension evenly across the fingerboard, thereby protecting your guitar...)
  • †  restrung one pair of boxers

Now, Parishioners,

some Freakonomics, Rectory Stylee -

Time is money

& all that Jazz...

  • †  Figuring out how to fix My Sexy Boxers - 30 minutes
  • †  Elastic - 2 metres (enough for two pair) $2.29 (plus GST)
  • †  Putting new elastic in not-so-sexy pair of boxers for practice - 60 minutes
  • †  New pair of boxers - maybe 4 bucks..?
  • †  Triumph of Logic over Emotion - priceless...

why can't Tom have a TV show? (15k image)

 Guacamole

I don't mind a bit o' Chisel, Parishioners -

especially the eponymous first album
which shows a great deal of unrealised Grace...

Cold Chisel - unrealised Grace (4k image)

In Breakfast at Sweethearts
(on the eponymous second album)
Screamin' Jimmy sings

the coffee's hot/and the toast is brown

as if they are all the things that matter in The Whirl...

Breakfast at Sweethearts - coffee, toast; OK (4k image)

This though occurred to me this evening

as Dr C & I were settling down to

a sunset, cold beer

and

guacamole!

Ah, nostalgia!

Those were the days;

communal guaca preparation

in the big kitchen on Broadway

after a day of music & poetry -

a time for winding down

or gearing up for a Big Night Out!

A Rich Life indeed...

avocados - we got both kinds... (61k image)

 Debating the Locals

As I mentioned earlier,
my buddy Brother T and his family

took me camping to Dolphin Point & Burrill Lake
(down past Ulladulla) on the weekend.

Much joi was had

and I would like to relate a tale
which may be of interest.

Socrates - tried, condemned to death, and executed in 399 BC (56k image)

After setting up camp
it came time to make a short trip into town for staples.

After procuring these goods
we were relaxing in the car,
enjoying the tranquility
and a relaxing beverage,

when we were approached by a group of fellows.

We presumed they were locals and greeted them accordingly,
and they indicated that they would enjoy a conversation.

Plato - to understand Plato it is necessary to know something of Sparta (13k image)

We idly exchanged banter
then I noticed that one of these fellows had a some sort of paling
and seemed to be examining it
in what I assumed was the reflection
of the streetlights in the passenger-side headlight.

I left the car to go see exactly what he was doing
and we spent several minutes
discussing the attributes and possible uses of such a paling.

What I Did on My Holidays

Camping - Brother T packed up me & the family and we took off to Burrill Lake Dolphin Point, South of Ulladulla, Jewel of the South Coast, or such... This involved much setting up of such as tents, collecting of firewood and barbecuing.

There are several clickable maps here

and a super-duper zooming one here

Ulladulla! (10k image)

Boating - first time I've been on the water in years! In a little 14 foot tinny - learned how to float one, and how to pull one out. Pounding across t' lake only inches from the water at a heady 8 knots! It's a crappy photo but it really did look like this - pelicans & all!

The collective noun for these birds is either a brief, a flock, a heave, a pod, a pouch, a raft, a rookery, a scoop, a squadron, a rookery - or something else...

pelicans (12k image)

Fishing - closely related to Boating. I watched Brother T & his daughter throw in lines and guarded the fish-finder device:

"Big black one at 18," I shouted; "little white one at 12" I whispered...

I taught Young Miss T to cast her line, then to bait her own hook; which left me relax & enjoi the tranquility. We threw back about 10 fish-tank-sized things & went in as the sun was going down.

Reading - I borrowed a copy of Sterling's The Artificial Kid and managed to get through about two pages. Still, I hadn't opened a book since that wonderful sprawling epic Los Gusanos...

Sleeping - how I love to sleep! One avoids the commotion & squabbling of the morning and emerges refreshed in time for breakfast and the first tasty beverage of the day! I had gone out & purchased 6' x 3' foam mattresses for everyone, which kept us all warm, dry and comfortable, and we all slept like logs. I am seriously considering replacing the Rectory futon with a slab of this stuff! More importantly, it harkened me back to my time in The Land of the Chrysanthemum Throne!

Guitaring - Brother D came down on Saturday & we hooked up for the night. He had a Yamaha G-100A & a fine finger-picking style. I can never play after I've had a few drinks & looked quite foolish...

Relaxing - lounging in a slightly wing-backed chair, tasty beverage in hand, surrounded by trees replete with attendant songbirds - it's goo to get back to Nature!

didn't look a thing like this though...

 Disarray!

Please forgive my absence, Parishioners,

but The Village

has fallen into disarray!

It seems that stones -

dark grey, oblong; elongated grey stone eggs, if you like; about 11 x 5 Holy Units; about one third of a cubic Holy Unit missing from North-East foundations (along the footpath...) of The Rectory

as such; only grey-

as such, only grey (15k image)

from the very foundations of The Rectory

are being stolen!

and launched through various windows

throughout the village -

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS AND *MUST* CEASE!

Those stones were taken from the same quarry as those of St Barnabus!

and represent not only my Youth

BUT MY FAITH!

I PLEAD these thefts cease

I PRAY for the return of the stones

and I FORGIVE

those who return them

Blessed be

your loving, patient, forgiving Pastor

This, 'Tish, is a geode -

an amethyst geode and associated devices (62k image)

the sexiest concept in wing-back chairs

EVAH!

PS: There shall be an Entire, Old Fashioned, Christian CONDEMNATION if The Church does not recover these Important Relics! This goes beyond me, Parishioners!

PPS: This is So Serious that I have been obliged to visit the local Prison & Girl's Comprehensive School (yes, sadly, one institution) to hunt for clues - rather than just my usual Pastoral visit...

Any information would be greatly appreciated (and, perhaps, some Sins might be Forgiven...)

 Sartre's Cookbook

Ah, Parishioners,

I have wanted to do this For Some Ages!

here we go!

Sartre's Cookbook

We have recently been lucky enough to discover several previously lost diaries of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre stuck in between the cushions of our office sofa. These diaries reveal a young Sartre obsessed not with the void, but with food. Apparently Sartre, before discovering philosophy, had hoped to write "a cookbook that will put to rest all notions of flavor forever." The diaries are excerpted here for your perusal.

* October 3

Spoke with Camus today about my cookbook. Though he has never actually eaten, he gave me much encouragement. I rushed home immediately to begin work. How excited I am! I have begun my formula for a Denver omelet.
