05/09/2004: "Some people...."
music: None yetmood: Happy as usual
Just spent a lovely afternoon in the sun by the swimming pool at a friends apartment complex. It was Ines' 2nd birthday (thanks for inviting me, Thomas and Laurence), and very pleasant. Strange to be the only non-parent there, but then again, I probably fit in more with the kids anyway!
I was out in the swimming pool, with about 30 kids and a few adults, when the local rent-a-cop came by, looking a little uncomfortable. He came over to me, and told me that ther had been complaints about the noise, and that we'd have to keep it down. It was obvious that he wasn't too sure why he was telling me this, but I guess that goes with the rent-a-cop territory.
Now, there are a few things that bother me about this:
- what sort of people would complainf about the noise of a bunch of kids laughing and having fun on a Sunny Sunday afternoon (it was only about 4:30pm)
- Why, of all the people there, did the rent-a-cop come straight to me to complain??? That takes me straight back to my school-days, when I would immediately get singled out for making noise, even when I wasn't. He managed to home in on the one person there who wasn't actually a parent, and secondly, who couldn't give a hoot if some people are so uptight that they get upset by the noise of children having fun.
Later on, some people (I guess the ones who complained) started yelling out from their balcony. It just makes me laugh really - Can you imagine getting inside the lives of these people? I mean, the kids weren't really making all that much noise even - sometimes when there is a lot of screaming going on (and I personally don't like it when parents just let their kids scream, but that is more a safety (or boy-cried-wolf-ey)issue) I can understand it, but it really was just the noise of happy kids having fun.
To change the subject, I just discovered a great new food-combination - warmed up croisant and home-brew stout. Delicious!

Clearly stunned, struck with awe, and impressed with your glistening wet body, the rent a cop naturally assumed you were the virile father of all those children, and being the responsible adult, he assumed you would keep them in line, however you define "line". It'is a mistake anyone could make chris, I mean look at it from his point of view. It's either that or he was actually responding to a call about a pervert, a nearly 40 year old in the pool with a bunch of kids...in a speedo no doubt...just not the sort of thing americans can handle....glad to see you didn't let the party poopers get to you though. let them eat cake butnot birthday cake!

Preachers with amps(need i say more). Not just "sunday a.m preachers with amps", but "Sunday a.m preachers with amps speaking completely in Spanish. Theres something totally freaky about vengence in Spanish. San Francisco, gotta love it!

Heh heh, I remember the stories my sister used to tell of living right next to a church in England - "Its the Bells, its the Bells....". I am lucky in that, in general, I have always been noisier than my neighbours, and so have never had cause to complain....
